Taiwanese port city of Kaohsiung is not the first place that comes to mind when you think of modern art and sculpture. Yet my last year’s visit there proved otherwise. Specifically, the whole area around Pier 2 has been turned into a sort of indoor-outdoor art landscape. From the pedestrian bridge over the canal to the quirky architectural display in container sculpture, it certainly left a lasting impression. The rest of the city is no slouch, either, with a couple of excellent art museums and colourful houses on Qijin island nearby. In short, if you do head to Taiwan, make sure you take the high-speed train to this gem of a town.
